After a quickie call from Spice in the late afternoon yesterday, I was pumped to watch last night's Wife Swap - which promised the swappage of a hip African American wife with a (get this) SCA wife. For those of you who didn't go to Our Alma Matter and/or who are not in the computer sciences, SCA stands for Society for Creative Anacronysm which basically translates as "society of people who think they live in an different century". Very very sadly, I came down with a bugger of a cold (enough for me to cancel din-din with Sophist) and fell asleep long before Wife Swap aired. So I am commissioning Spice to give us a run-down on the WS happenings.
Thanks in advance, Spice.
And as an aside, I suggest that y'all check out the This American Life episode entitled "Simulated Worlds" on the Our Favorites list at www.thislife.org. Very very good. Although if you've known me for more than 10 minutes, you've probably heard this shpeal already.

Okay. AS I WAS WRITING THIS, Spice commented about this on the previous post. Clearly she's pretty excited. Maybe she can expand???
Okay, so first you should read my comment on the post after this - needless to say, I didn't realize that for some, SCA was not only a hobby but a full-time lifestyle.
Other highlights included:
-The normal-family (referred to as NF from here on - M for medieval) kids having to do Scottish highland dancing for gym class - don't step on the sword or you'll die!
-The NF dad rebelling against the M home-schooling and putting his kids back in normal school.
-The NF mom being subjected to a fantasy role-playing game and complaining to the camera that "it goes only like this for hours!"
-The NF mom determining that the M kids were socially freakish and deciding that some good ol' public school would do them some good. The M daughter ended up making...a friend! And having her over for dinner! But then the M mom (who had substitute taught as part of NF mom's job and done a crappy job) freaked out about public schools and the M kids went right back to home-schooling. Thankfully, the M dad decided that letting the kids have friends over was a good thing, though.
-The M daughter displaying her awkwardness through her total inability to use...a phone! Turns out that the dad has a cell phone, but there's no house phone and no one else gets a cell. So somewhere there's a _13-year-old girl_ who until recently didn't know her own area code, let alone how to operate a phone. NF mom gave her a cell phone as a goodbye present, and she was mighty happy.
-M son was very much a budding SCA/CS nerd. He was petulant, spoke too loud, and though he knew more than anyone else. I think the computer lab at OAM probably has a job available for him. NF mom made him take on a normal job at a restaurant so he could learn how to interact with people.
-M mom taught NF daughter how to belly dance. Unfortunately, NF mom did not want to continue this activity with her daughter - NF mom's big lesson was that she doesn't spend enough time with her kids.
-Oh, when the rules changed, NF mom decided to keep M dad (who was the 'king of the family') in line by smashing one of his D&D figures each time he didn't go along with the rules. The whole family gasped when she smashed one to show she was serious.
-The closing shot was NF dad and NF son playing football in the street in their medieval outfits (earlier, the dad said he looked like "a deck of cards") and M mom quizzically wondering what they were doing outside the house instead of inside playing the lute or whatever.
I think that's it - but y'all (especially those who went to OAM) need to check it out if it's rerun.
Brilliant, Spice!!!!!! You must get your own blog again one day. That show sounds too funny. I LOVE that the NF mom smashed the stupid freakin d&d figurines when she was mad. What an effed up M family. Hope there aren't too many of them. I wonder if they use modern medicine, or if they are opposed.
