NEWSFLASH: hygeine style.
I smell like a gosh-darn man.
I'm wearing men's deodorant for the second day in a row, having run out of my lovely lady-smelling stick of underarm product.
Every now and again, I my nasal cavities catch a big cloud of manliness wafting up from my pits. It smells so toxic! And I'm sweating more than usual, presumably because my body is trying to rid itself of the toxic "man scent" I tried to shove into my pores.
Ick.
Note to self: Walgreens on the way home...

Nightmare Update: further analysis
So I realized last night why Stephanie Tubbs Jones made an important appearance in my dream about Sarah Palin (see post below for further details) ...
... because the ONLY candidate who could be a WORSE choice for VP would be a DEAD PERSON.
(And P.S. - go to the post right before this one and read Grrbear's comment. Friggin' hilarious.)

Nightmares
Okay, so this Sarah Palin thing has really been bugging the crap out of me during the past couple of weeks (i.e. - since I learned who the hell she is). She has pretty much dominated every conversation I've had and has been the cause of some pretty rough nights of sleep. On a scale of "shootin' my AK-47 in excitement" to "anxiously rocking in the corner of my room" (thanks, Spice, for that quote), I'm bumping up to the "rocking" end of the spectrum.
Things were getting so bad that I decided to take some action by putting my money where my mouth is. I attended an Obama campaign orientation meeting on Saturday. Which was good - for me and, from what I could tell, for everyone else in the room. Two weeks ago, they had about n=17 people attend a similar event. On Saturday, the campaign office was stuffed to the gills - mostly with women in their 50s-60s. The "Palin Effect"? I think so! That's why I was there.
I'm planning on traveling to a swing state - Ohio (if they need me - they'll get my plane flight money if they have enough people on the ground) or Nevada (where all of CA volunteers have been routed).
Anyway, deciding to do something about it caused my edgy anxiety to drain from my system, leaving me in a pool of exhaustion - as though I'd been thround 2 weeks of intense final exams. So I took a nap on the couch and dreamt.........
.....that Palin announced she was leaving the ticket because the press had been too hard on her family and McCain replaced her with (the now deceased) Stephanie Tubbs Jones! And I thought to myself (remember, this is my dream-mind): "OMG! Now they're pandering to not only women, but African-Americans AND Democrats! What is the world coming to?!?!?!"
Thankfully, I've had really wonderful nights of sleep since I decided to get involved. I still read liberal blogs like they're crack to fuel my anger so that I stick to my guns (not literally...remember, I'm a liberal...I'll be sticking to my latte) and pound the pavement.

Calling all Pissed Off People!
Who wants to join me for a weekend in Ohio of canvassing for the Obama campaign? I think I might just shell out that $500 for the opportunity to feel like I'm doing something about the potential horrors of 4 more years. Anybody with me? Maybe Nevada instead?

Offended
I've been letting this whole Sarah Palin thing simmer in the back of my mind for a couple of days, trying to figure out what I really think of it. Last night, after giving Jigs more than an ear-full, I figured it out. I am deeply offended.
That may seem weird, seeing as how I've been a staunch Obama supporter from the beginning. It shouldn't really matter much, right? And the fact that she's so dreadfully inexperienced should make things look better for my team, right?
Well the fact is, in addition to being an Obama supporter, I'm a feminist. And I'm shaken to my feminist core with the choice of Palin. With her acceptance speech - pandering to the Clinton supporters with hopes of winning them over to her side - the ticket seems to be making the assumption that woman who make up Clinton's base (women's-rights-era feminists, as far as I can tell) cannot see through the bullshit. Palin is a pro-life creationist. COME ON!!! Give me a m-f'in break!!
And why, John McCain, did you select a woman who is so extremely NOT READY for the job when there are plenty of other woman in the Republican party who have the experience to do the job well? This just seems like affirmative action gone all wrong to me. Just so ridiculous it's laughable.
Is anyone else out there also offended? Chatter, please....
(As a side note, Ma and Pa Jigs are from Wasilla, which finally scored a star on the map. A town of pop. 7000. Blink and you miss it. Seriously. I've been there. Twice.)

Dark was....well....dark...
Jigs and I finally got out of the house for a date of sorts on Saturday night to see The Dark Knight. If you haven't seen it yet, I recommend that you do. And as you must have heard by now, it is DARK. And Heath Ledger is GOOD. And CREEPY. And I didn't *once* think during the movie that I was watching HL. Instead, I thought, "I'm watching the Joker and I'm scared."
The only negative thing I have to say about DK is about Batman. I *hated* Christian Bale's weird throaty accent when he was in the rubber suit. It was really distracting and I don't know why the movie team encourage it. Weird.
Anyhoo, I'm still sad about HL and his death - and especially sad that no pharmacist looked at his deathly mix of meds. But at least he went out with a good performance. (Albeit disturbing.)

Trips!
Jigs and I spent the first 2 weeks of July in Alaska and Lake Shasta and there were tons of stories to share and pix to post. But like most things of late, I just didn't get around to doing it. Ugh. When there's something worth blogging about, I don't have the time to do it. And when I finally get the time to do more blogging, there's nothing worth blogging about. Such is life, I guess.
Anyway, I thought I shouldn't let our trip tales go completely to waste. One of the best things we did was take a plane ride up to glaciers and over mountains near Anchorage. Jigs had to sit the ride out because there was only room for 3 passengers and me, his sis, and his sis' BF won the seats. Turns out Jigs had his opportunity to ride in the small plane when he took a fishing trip with the pilot one summer during college. (The pilot was "the best bush pilot in Alaska"...so named by Jigs' pap. I don't know about that label, but he sure got us close to the glaciers!)

Goal and Reward
The Jigs is currently on a campaign to lose some weight - 10 pounds to be exact - a goal that, if achieved, will win him this:

(I personally cannot stand the click and buzz of music-based video games, so I am trying to sabotage his efforts with baked goods and the like. But I digress.)
This is not the first time Jigs has set a goal-reward system for himself, and he has a long history of holding back on the reward until the goal is achieved. His will power is impressive.
Toward my own self-improvement, I've decided to set up my own goal-reward plan. I'm full of reward ideas, but a bit slim on goals.
So I decided to poll the blogring. Is anyone out there working on some sort of self-improvement right now? If so, what? And do you have a reward?

Thoughts - all relating to excercise - in no particular order
(1) 24-Hour Fitness makes it really difficult to quit a memberships. I've been paying $45 a month for 2 years - directly applied to my credit card. Considering the number of times I've gone to the gym, I probably paid an average of $15 per visit. In addition to this ridiculous cost, I no longer live or work close to a gym, so it's time to quit! But it turns out to be not-so-easy! In this day-and-age of internet and complex digital phone messaging systems, I cannot use one of these convenient options. Instead, I have to physically present myself in the actual gym (which I no longer live near) to quit my membership. I wasn't born yesterday - I know they're doing this to increase barriers to quitting and as soon as I walk in there to declare my desire to quit, I'll get a mouthful about the need to STAY FIT! I cannot wait. It will be good times - guaranteed.
(2) I've decided that the only way I will actually get regular exercise and feel good about it is to build it into my everyday life. This is the goal in most public health interventions around exercise vis-a-vis obesity and I tend to agree that it's the way to go. Several years ago, physical activity public healthers launched a "10,000 Steps a Day" campaign, trying to get folks to (big surprise here!) walk 10,000 steps a day. When I graduated from ye olde PH School, I was given a pedometer as a parting gift (along with a mug, as though I don't have enough of those). I found the pedometer these several years later whilst packing for my move and I decided to start wearing it to see how many actual steps I take in an average day. What have I realized? 10,000 steps is IS A LOT OF STEPS!!! And this is coming from a person who does not drive and takes public transportation everywhere - and is, therefore, required to walk A LOT. By A LOT, I mean I walk an average of 45 minutes to an hour a day. (And I walk quickly, so my 45 minutes probably covers a distance of an average American's 60 minutes of walking.) With all this walking, I BARELY (and I mean BARELY) get within a stone's throw of 10,000 steps. Conclusion? This is an intervention destined to fail. Just like the Surgeon General recommending 30-40 minutes of vigorous activity 5 days a week. Not gonna happen.
(3) I'm considering re-investing my heart and soul in ballet. I stopped going a year ago, when summer activities picked up. Fall was a CRAZY time at work and the whole ballet thing fell completely off the radar. I'm sortof scared to go back, but I think it's time. I MUST DANCE!! Updates to come.

Feds are dealing with one of my biggest pet peeves!
Jigs and I were talking about how annoying it is when TV ads ARE REALLY LOUD COMPARED TO THE INTERRUPTED PROGRAM last night when we were out on our back porch enjoying some Cherries Garcia, only to find the mood turn sour when the living room TV started blasting. (Note to readers: the Trader Joe's in San Carlos sells half-gallons for $4.49. A steal!) Anyhoo, little did I know that the feds are actually trying to take on this issue. Yay!
So even in though they won't be touching the impeachment of GWB, at least they'll be making my TV viewing more pleasant. Maybe.
And BTW Grrrbear, I have nothing to do with Nancy P. anymore. Sorry man. I'm now represented by Anna Eshoo, who introduced said TV ad bill. Two years ago, I was represented by Barbara Lee (she "speaks for me"!) and I wish I were still in her district. She's like the west coast Kucinich!

Shout out to the hometown kid!
Dennis Kucinich spent about 4 hours on the House floor last night pitching the case for impeaching GWB. He has 35 articles of impeachment against the president and read them all, word-for-word.
It's so crazy to me how much time was wasted on Clinton's impeachment trial. Though morally questionable, Clinton's actions had little to no impact on others' lives and livelihoods. Comparing the situations, I'm reminded that our country's priorities are pretty out of balance.
Alas.
While I'm at it, I want to give a big ol' wag of my finger to Lieberman. I never really liked the guy, but my dislike is reaching new highs with his endorsement of McCain and claims that the Obama campaign is using "sleazy tactics". Come on!

Cockle-doodle-doo!
So yes. As Jigs commented on the last post, Kauai has roosters. Lots of them. And they have no sense of when it's appropriate to crow. They do it at all hours, daytime and night.
As the story goes, the roosters (and chickens, I suppose) became an island-wide problem after a hurricane, when the winds freed a bunch of roosters/chickens living on farms. Now they've taken over and can be seen wandering around all parts of the island. Here's a pic of them enjoying the sun and breeze near the lounge chairs at the Poi'pu Marriott.
Damn you, roosters!
